Today, there are many drugs of various forms of release to combat infections caused by pathogenic microbes. And "Augmentin" among them. The drug is suitable for both adult patients and children. As part of this publication, we consider the instructions for the use of "Augmentin" and all the important details about the medicine.

Composition, form of release of Augmentin

The composition contains two active active ingredients - amoxicillin (an antibiotic known for a long time) and clavulanic acid. Thanks to both components, the medicine is very effective.

Amoxicillin is one of the antibiotics of the penicillin group, which is endowed with a wide spectrum of action. But over time, in the treatment of certain diseases, penicillins ceased to produce results, as harmful microorganisms learned to produce beta-lactamases.

These substances fight penicillin, and the medicine cannot fulfill its purpose. As a result, the number of diseases amenable to antibiotics of the amoxicillin group has been reduced significantly. Scientists began to think about how to create an antibiotic to cope with such a problem as beta-lactamases.

The solution was found by British biochemists who tried to combine amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. The second substance has a detrimental effect on beta-lactamase produced by bacteria.Clavulanic acid itself has an antibacterial property, although not as powerful as penicillins.

Excipients of the drug include:

  • xanthan gum;
  • silicon dioxide;
  • aspartame;
  • succinic acid;
  • colloidal silicon dioxide;
  • orange, raspberry and Sweet molasses flavors;
  • hypromellose.

The antibiotic "Augmentin" is the most popular in the world, it is prescribed by thousands of doctors! And this is not at all surprising, because almost no microbe can resist such a composition.

The drug has a negative effect on many types of harmful microorganisms:

  • aerobes and anaerobes;
  • gram-positive and negative bacteria.

There is a different form of medicine:

  • pills;
  • suspension;
  • powder for infusion and intravenous use.

Doctors try to prescribe tablets, and they can be of different dosages (the first value is the amount in mg of amoxicillin, the second value is the amount in mg of clavulanic acid):

  • 250/125;
  • 500/125;
  • 875/125;
  • 1000/62,5.

pharmachologic effect

"Augmentin" is an antibacterial and antimicrobial medicine, has a wide range of actions.

Due to its composition, the drug has a detrimental effect on bacteria:

  • staphylococcus (staphylococcus);
  • streptococci;
  • treponema;
  • Shigella
  • leptospira;
  • Klebsiella;
  • moraxella;
  • enterococci;
  • Helicobacter pylori;
  • Salmonella
  • clostridia;
  • cholera vibrios;
  • gardnerella;
  • Proteus;
  • hemophilic bacillus.

Active substances are rapidly absorbed through the blood into all tissues of the human body, evenly distributed. Thanks to this distribution, therapy is very effective and versatile. The drug is excreted by the renal and extrarenal mechanisms.

Indications for use of the antibiotic, special instructions

“Augmentin” is prescribed for damage to various parts of the body by microorganisms: the respiratory tract, soft and lung tissue, epidermis, genitourinary system, oral cavity (including teeth), joints, bone tissue.

Appointment for diseases of the respiratory organs:

  • tracheitis;
  • rhinitis;
  • bronchitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • pneumonia;
  • tonsillitis;
  • laryngitis;
  • otitis;
  • sinusitis.

Diseases of the genitourinary system:

  • urethritis;
  • gonorrhea;
  • cystitis;
  • pyelonephritis.

Other cases:

  • periodontitis;
  • septic abortion;
  • dental abscess;
  • sepsis;
  • preventive reception during various operations.

In no case does self-medication apply! As you can see, the antibiotic is different in concentration of active substances. Only a doctor can choose the right dosage for a given disease, by age.

For patients with kidney disease, the dosage required is lower than for people with healthy kidneys.

Be that as it may, when taking the Augmentin antibiotic, you need to check the blood formation, the functioning of the kidneys and liver from time to time.

The minimum course of treatment is a week, in some situations a specialist can prescribe a five-day course. For more than two weeks, the drug should not be taken. If in 14 days the health situation has not changed for the better, then a more powerful antibiotic should be used. Treatment with Augmentin is possible for 3 weeks, but in this case you need to alternate taking tablets with injections.

The instructions for use "Augmentin" states that you need to take the drug with food. This is not a mandatory criterion, since the absorption of the active substances does not depend on the fullness of the stomach! But as many studies have shown, this technique entails a minimum of side effects.

The active substances contained in the drug weaken the work of estrogen-containing drugs.

Therefore, women who use contraceptives should be aware of the additional protection during treatment with Augmentin. Augmentin does not interact biochemically with alcohol. But, like alcohol, an antibiotic acts on the liver. Taking them together is not recommended so as not to burden or injure the organ.

Instructions for use for adults, children

How to drink Augmentin correctly? Only a doctor will prescribe a dosage, but we suggest considering options.

  1. The usual dosage of Augmentin for adults is 250 + 125 mg three times a day.
  2. In the acute course of the disease, 500/125 mg (three pcs. Per day) is used or Augmentin 875/125 - two pcs. in a day.

It is worth noting that it is required to take the medicine at regular intervals and observe the time of admission strictly. This will maintain the desired concentration of substances in the tissues for a productive fight against bacteria. For example, you are prescribed 3 tablets per day, which means you need to take them every eight hours. If the reception is two-fold, then the gap between the reception should be exactly twelve hours.

Augmentin for children is more suitable as a suspension:

  1. For children under the age of two, only a 125 mg suspension is suitable.
  2. Children after two years can have a drug of any concentration, but the pediatrician prescribes the dosage.

Can adults take a suspension medicine? This excites those who cannot swallow the whole pill, there is a gag reflex (it is not recommended to break the Augmentin pill). It is possible, but only a concentration of 400 mg of amoxicillin per 5 ml of clavulanic acid is suitable.

A therapeutic agent is prescribed even for newborn babies:

  1. For babies up to three months, a daily dosage of the drug is recommended with a calculation of 30 mg of the active substance amoxicillin per kilogram of weight.
  2. Over three months, the daily dosage is from 20 to 40 mg per 1 kg of weight, if a suspension of 125 mg is used.

Evenly distribute the dose three times a day.
How to take a suspension for adults?

  1. If you have only 125 mg, then take 2 to 3 times a day for 20 ml of the drug.
  2. If the suspension is 400 mg, then you need to take 11 ml twice a day.

Intravenous injection only:

  1. Adults 1000 mg should be administered every 8 hours for a mild form of the disease, and after 4-6 hours for acute illness.
  2. Only a doctor prescribes treatment for children, and also only if there is an urgent need for intravenous injections.

During pregnancy and lactation

Women in an “interesting position” and nursing mothers are interested in the question of whether it is possible to take Augmentin to treat infections caused by bacteria. No doctor can give a definite answer, and the annotation to the medicine also does not spell out such a possibility.

The attending physician will have to assess all the risks associated with taking the antibiotic and not taking it, and only after that appoint “Augmentin”.
As you already know, the active components of the product enter the bloodstream, which means milk.

There is no evidence that the medicine harmed the baby through food received from the mother, but there are many examples of the harm the microbes raging in the mother’s body did to the child!

Interaction with other drugs and alcohol

We have already talked about the simultaneous use of contraceptives. And what happens when taking Augmentin with other drugs, how do the substances interact?

  1. “Allopurinol” and “Augmentin” are not recommended to be taken together, since the interaction of these drugs sometimes leads to allergies, which are expressed by a rash on the skin.
  2. Probenecid slows the withdrawal of amoxicillin from the body, so the simultaneous administration is also only for special purposes and doctor's instructions.
  3. Anticoagulant drugs need to be adjusted by dosage more carefully if they are being taken. The fact is that in people taking Augmentin, in some cases, there is a violation of prothrombin time.
  4. The active substances of the drug do not "argue" with alcohol, so taking alcohol-containing drugs at the same time as Augmentin is possible.

Contraindications and side effects

"Augmentin" is not recommended for use with:

  • intolerance to penicillin group preparations;
  • with renal failure, it is possible to take only a suspension of 125 mg, tablets of 500 and 250 mg;
  • intolerance to the substances contained in the medicine;
  • phenylketonuria (suspension not applicable);
  • Augmentin tablets for adults are contraindicated if the patient weighs less than 40 kg, and children under 12 years old should take only a suspension.

It is possible to appoint extremely carefully with such ailments:

  • kidney disease
  • Infectious mononucleosis;
  • liver dysfunction.

The drug is well tolerated by patients, but still there are side effects, albeit extremely rare:

  1. Dysbacteriosis is the most common side effect of any antibiotic. The fact is that antimicrobials destroy not only harmful microorganisms, but also beneficial bacteria. Therefore, many patients note diarrhea, skin rashes, candidiasis of the mucous membranes, pain in the stomach.
  2. From the nervous system rarely observed: dizziness, sleep loss, anxiety, pain in the head.

Rarely:

  • allergic reaction;
  • vomiting and nausea;
  • dyspepsia;
  • when taking the medicine suspension, the enamel on the teeth may change color;
  • hepatitis;
  • anemia;
  • thrombocytosis.

All prescribed conditions are reversible!

As for the effect of the medicine on the reaction, it is not there, and driving a car while taking Augmentin is not prohibited. This antibiotic does not cause drug dependence.

An overdose is possible only with the unauthorized appointment of treatment and if the recommended dose is exceeded.

First of all, there are disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract, nausea and vomiting begin, pain in the stomach is felt. To fix the problem, you need to rinse the stomach, consult a doctor.

Drug Analogs

Augmentin is the first but not the only antibiotic of its kind on the market, consisting of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

Today, doctors can offer analogues of "Augmentin" under the trade names:

  • "Ecoclave";
  • Amoxiclav;
  • "Medoclav";
  • "Flemoklav";
  • "Ranclave";
  • "Panklav."

Generic drugs have a lower cost than Augmentin.

But if you want to take only a medicine with guaranteed quality, then do not use analogues.

Signs of an allergy to Augmentin

As for allergies, you need to talk about this in more detail. How does the reaction manifest:

  • urticaria;
  • itchy sensations;
  • anaphylactic shock.

If you suspect an allergic reaction, you should immediately stop taking Augmentin, consult a doctor about the appointment of another drug.

The analogue is also selected only by the doctor, because he, too, can be an allergen for a certain patient!

Therefore, noting the intolerance of the medicine used, you can not arbitrarily replace it with a similar one.

This article is intended only for familiarization with the drug and its methods of administration. In order not to risk health, before using, you need to talk with your doctor. We wish you good health and longevity!
