Today, irises, which have become a magnificent decoration of gardens, are found in the most incredible colors. For quality growth, plants periodically need to be moved to a new place. Autumn iris transplantation is a responsible matter that you need to know everything about.

Features of autumn iris transplant

You can transplant and plant irises not only in the autumn, but also in the spring, and even in the summer. However, experienced flower growers prefer to do this precisely at the end of the plant growing season, when all processes in them begin to slow down, but at the same time have not stopped yet, and therefore the flowers have time to take root.

The most favorable time

It is necessary to transplant irises 1 time in 4 years, and with a decrease in flowering quality 1 time in 3 years. The beginning of autumn is considered the optimal period, since at this time the plants are still active enough to take root; and there is no risk that they, taking root in a new place, will be exposed to the negative effects of summer heat.

Also, autumn transplant has the following advantages:

  • a significant reduction in the number of insect pests, which when transplanted in the spring will weaken the plants, and worsen their survival in a new place;
  • ensuring high-quality flowering in spring - if you touch the irises before flowering, it will not be strong;
  • sufficient humidity - with the onset of autumn, it is easier to maintain the necessary soil moisture, which after transplantation is especially important for the full development of irises.

Important! It is optimal to complete the landing work before September 15.

Preparing planting material

Prepare irises for a transplant to a new place begin in August.A month before moving the plants, it is necessary to completely stop their feeding. 7 days before the transplant, the leaves are cut off from the flowers. Only their petioles 10-15 cm tall, extending from the outlet, remain sticking out.

If the rhizomes are divided, then all places of the cuts should be sprinkled with wood ash to prevent rot. You can also, instead of sprinkling, withstand rhizomes in a solution of the drug Maxim, which will protect them from damage by pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses. If desired, combine both methods of plant protection against spoilage well. Special additional measures for irises are not required. Autumn iris transplantation takes place without any special difficulties, with the implementation of a number of simple preparatory work.

Soil requirements

The soil for irises is not acidic. To reduce its acidity six months before the transplant, you need to add chalk. It is also important to ensure the nutrition of the soil and its processing, for which preparation is carried out. It consists of several stages, which are described below in order.

  1. Quality weeding from weeds. It is important not only to tear off the aerial part of the weeds, but also to remove their roots, which will drown the flowers, and absorb nutrients from the soil required for irises.
  2. Enrichment of the soil with nutrients. To do this, on 1 m2 you need to make a bucket of humus and 500 ml of fine, well-sifted wood ash. Superphosphate is added in the amount of ½ cup.
  3. Providing soil friability. For this, 1 bucket of coarse sand is introduced per 1 m2.
  4. Digging up. So that all the introduced components are evenly mixed, the soil is dug up to 1 bayonet shovel.
  5. Watering. The soil should be abundantly moistened. You can use cold water.
  6. Shelter. The bed, prepared for irises, must be tightly covered with a film and left to stand for 2 weeks.

Soil preparation is done a week before planting flowers.

Transfer to another place

When transplanting in the fall, it is worth dividing the rhizomes. This will not only increase the number of irises in the garden, but also provide maximum flowering. The rhizome is cut into parts consisting of 2 fused annual links whose diameter is about 3 cm.The desired length of the separated part of the rhizome is about 10 cm. Each cut piece should have 2 roots up to 10 cm long and a rosette with leaves.

Wells for planting are made spacious enough so that the rhizomes fit into them easily and do not deform. At the bottom of the hole you need to form a mound on which rhizomes will be placed. In heavy soil it is formed from coarse sand. The embedment depth should be 2 times the diameter of the rhizome. A method with partial instillation of the rhizome and leaving part of it in the air for autumn planting is not desirable.

Rules for care after transplantation in the fall

Special care for irises after transplantation in the autumn is not required. In the absence of rain and severe drying of the soil, it is recommended to moisten it. Before starting frosts, care must be taken to warm the irises. To do this, they can spud or mulch the bed with a layer of peat. Not the best, but acceptable material for mulching is sawdust. Such work can be carried out only from the moment the average daily temperature drops to +5 C. If you warm the flowers earlier, then the rhizomes can rot.

In the event that frosts occur before the formation of snow cover, as well as in areas with very cold winters, it is necessary to additionally warm the plantings with a layer of sawdust. Transplantation to a new place of irises should always be carried out taking into account climatic conditions.

Transplant Disease Prevention

It is not difficult to prevent the appearance of iris diseases during an autumn transplant. First of all, it is necessary to choose areas where irises have not been the smallest over the past 5 years. Rhizome treatment with ash and Maxim should be mandatory.

If there is a risk that the soil in the area selected for transplantation may be infected, it must be shed with a strong solution of manganese. Such processing should be carried out no later than 7 days before the irises are planted.

Autumn transplantation of irises will allow you to get magnificent flower beds in your garden, pleasing with its beauty from year to year. Choosing from a variety of varieties, the flower grower will create his own unique collection, which will be preserved and increased with proper care of plants.
