Such a typical variety of sedum, as a stonecrop prominent, came to our gardens from Asia, where the plant can often be found in the meadows and dry slopes of Japan, China and Korea. Due to the harsh natural conditions of growth, the culture is unpretentious and undemanding with plentiful and prolonged flowering, which adorns the infield in the dull fall season.

Description of varieties and species
Stonecrop visible with thickened stems and serrated oval leaf plates belongs to the genus Succulents from the family Tolstyankovye. The height of the shoots, depending on the variety and growing conditions, can vary from 40 to 80 cm. Flowers resembling a five-pointed star in shape are collected in corymbose inflorescences with a diameter of 15 cm. Flowering, in which sedum pleases the eye with a variety of colors, is noted in the second half of summer and to the very frosts. The root system is tuberous.
It is customary to classify the fruits of prolonged breeding labor precisely by the color of inflorescences.
Especially popular are the following grades of stonecrop prominent:
- white - medium-sized Iceberg and Frosty Morne;
- cream - Star Dust with shoots not exceeding a height of 35 cm;
- pink - variegated and low Diamond Edge, Matron with leaf blades and shoots with a reddish tint, frost-resistant Karl, whose shoots are preserved almost until spring heat;
- carmine - stonecrop prominent Diamond with a long flowering period, which became the basis for obtaining a large number of modern varieties, as well as Carmen with distinctive high shoots.
Growing plants from seeds
In order to plant a stonecrop visible on a flowerbed or in a garden with the onset of heat, it is necessary to take care of getting seedlings in advance.
To do this, in March:
- Containers for seedlings are prepared, which are filled with a layer of soil mixture of 15 cm from garden soil and sand.
- Seeds that are previously aged in a solution of manganese are distributed over the surface of the substrate.
- The seed does not close up, but only slightly crushed by river sand.
- The box is covered with a film and installed on the lower shelf of the refrigerator, where the seeds are stratified.
- After 15 days, during which the crops are daily aired and moistened if necessary, the container is moved to a room with a temperature regime of 18-20 ° C.
- When shoots appear, the film is removed completely.
- After the formation of a pair of real leaves, the seedlings dive into separate cups filled with loose soil.
How and when to plant a stonecrop prominent
Planting of sedum grown by seedling can be carried out throughout the growing season. However, more optimal terms fall in the spring, when a stable warm temperature regime is established. A visible stonecrop is not demanding for lighting, but it is worth choosing open areas away from deciduous trees and shrubs. Fallen foliage creates a dense litter, which is not only a source of infection, but can also lead to the death of plants due to the impossibility of breaking through the leaf layer in the spring. To obtain healthy flowers, it is recommended to prepare the site in advance with the introduction of organics that improve fertility.
Planting seedlings is carried out according to a certain scheme:
- In the selected area, recesses are excavated at a distance of 20 cm from each other.
- Seedlings are placed in the holes, the roots of which are covered with soil.
- The earth in the near-stem circle is slightly compacted and watered.
Important! Only pre-seasoned seedlings are planted in open ground.
Outdoor Care
Culture perfectly combines the beauty of flowering with undemanding. But to obtain the most spectacular plants with high decorative qualities, it is recommended to observe the basic agrotechnical requirements for growing stonecrop.
Watering and sprinkling
Plants need abundant and regular watering immediately after planting, when the rooting process takes place. In the future, watering the flowers will be required during periods of prolonged drought. Since under natural conditions the stonecrop calmly tolerates drought, the succulent does not need sprinkling, the purpose of which is to raise the level of humidity.
Soil treatment
Sedum Spectabile (Sedum Spectabile) loves clean soil without weeds, which inhibit its development and adversely affect the decorative perennial. In order for the plant to maintain beauty and health, you should regularly weed the beds and loosen the soil in the near-stem circle.
Top dressing
When growing a flower, dressings are optional, but they allow you to make flowering more magnificent and long. As nutritional compounds, it is recommended to use phosphorus-potassium complexes without nitrogen, which weakens the immunity of colors.
Pruning and limiting growth
To maintain decorativeness, if necessary, cut off overgrown bushes, as well as remove dried flower stalks. Before the arrival of severe cold weather, the shoots of the stonecrop of a prominent crop are shortened to a height of 2 cm. In order to prevent the unwanted growth of the succulent plant due to the intensive growth of the root system, it is recommended to dig in the soil limiters in the form of plates or slate.
Pest and Disease Treatment
The advantages of stonecrop prominent over other flowering plants include resistance to diseases and pests. Among the former, gray rot associated with overflows stands out, which can be cured with the help of a fungicide.Insecticides help get rid of harmful insects from which aphids can be observed, sawfly and spider mite.
Propagation by cuttings and division of the bush
When cuttings are carried out in the summer, planting material is prepared from healthy stems. Rooted cuttings should be in water or immediately in the ground, deepening them by 1 cm in a shaded place. Abundant watering is not required.
In spring or autumn, you can divide the bush. The overgrown plant is extracted from the soil and is divided into parts, each of which must have a growth point. Pre-processed and dried delenki are planted in prepared wells, the distance between which remains within 30-40 cm.
Landscape design
Thanks to the variety of varieties with different heights and colors, the stonecrop prominent found its place in landscape design:
- Low-growing varieties are used to frame garden paths and borders in park areas.
- Floral arrangements from different grades of stonecrop prominent look spectacular in mixborders and flowerbeds.
- Due to the undemanding culture to the soil composition, it is widely used in the design of alpine hills and rockeries.
- Often you can find sedum near water art objects.
Thus, the undemanding and spectacular flower stonecrop visible with the late flowering period has now gained great popularity among flower growers and landscape designers.
