Chilling cold: 17 atmospheric images from the coldest city on Earth

Photographer Amos Chapler decided to visit the coldest place in the Northern Hemisphere. He shared unrivaled images that convey the atmosphere of a chilling cold, the beauty of the snowy expanses and the life of the people who live in the city.

Oymyakon is a small town in the Republic of Sakha, Russia. It was here that in 1924 the lowest temperature on Earth was recorded. 79 degrees below zero (Celsius) became an absolute record.

Amos Chapler could not believe that people really live in the city. When he arrived there, he was amazed, because Oymyakon became for him one of the most visually beautiful places on Earth.

Car owners turn on engines at night so that gasoline and car parts do not freeze.

The gas stations in Oymyakon look rather unusual, but this architecture allows you to keep warm in the coldest days of the year.

The town is provided with heat thanks to the coal-fired power plant. She is the only one in Oymyakon. Diggers mine new coal every morning.

A local farmer, Nikolai Petrovich, drives all his cows into a separate insulated barn every morning. Without this, animals will die literally in a night.

Most houses do not have their own water supply and separate toilets, so most of the "ladies' rooms" look like this:

The road from Oymyakon leads to Kolyma. This path is called the "road of bones."

In winter, everything freezes in the city - from roads to every fence on the street. People try to dress as warm as possible. Most prefer outerwear made of real fur, because this is the only way to keep the body warm in such weather conditions.

Even the statues freeze.

Local girl returns from university:

A beautiful shot was obtained when trying to photograph people who went into the local cathedral. Frost leaves a cloud of cold.

Ice and snow covered houses, which are located near the center.

A guard dog near one of the houses.Do not worry about her, she lives in a well-insulated booth.

Sneakers on electric wires. They are in every city.

It is amazing how people manage to adapt and improve their lives even in regions with such an extreme climate. It is even more surprising how a photographer from forever warm Miami could live for several months in Oymyakon.
