Plant description
Chinese wisteria is represented by a vine with a lignified, rather thin trunk with a diameter of up to 25 cm and flowering shoots, which in natural conditions of growth can reach a height of 20 m.
Unpaired leaf plates collected in sockets lose their edge with age and become smooth. The foliage is painted green. Loose inflorescences are formed simultaneously with the blooming of foliage. At the end of summer, repeated but less intense flowering may occur.
Common types and varieties
Today, many forms of Chinese wisteria are known, of which they are popular in culture:
- "Macrostachia" - a frost-resistant hybrid blooms with lilac flowers with a heady aroma.
- “Alba” is a form with white inflorescences that look spectacular against the backdrop of blossoming greenery.
- "Blue Sapphire" is a luxurious variety, which is represented by dense inflorescences of a gentle blue color, effectively falling down and creating a bewitching sight.
- "Prolific" is a purple wisteria with a bluish tint, which is an excellent choice for decorating walls, arbors.
Planting Chinese Wisteria in the open ground
Planting a decorative creeper is carried out in the spring, when the threat of freezing frost disappears. For Chinese Wisteria, sunny and calm areas with fertile soil with a slightly alkaline reaction are selected.
Wisteria is planted in open ground according to the following scheme:
- Landing pits with dimensions of 60x60 cm are prepared, where a layer of sand and 2 tablespoons of superphosphate are previously added.
- Next, a seedling is lowered into the recess, which is dug in by the extracted soil.
- The trunk circle is compacted and watered
Important! A reliable support should be installed near the wisteria, the role of which can also be played by a wall, gazebo or fence.
How to care for a plant
In order to grow a graceful and abundantly flowering vine in a personal plot, comprehensive care should be taken:
- Watering. The plant is moistened moderately, but regularly, so that the trunk circle constantly remains slightly moist. With the advent of autumn, the volume and frequency of watering is reduced.
- Top dressing. To ensure lush and prolonged flowering, which is the reason for the planting of an exotic representative of the flora, it is necessary to feed wisteria twice a month during the period of active growth, alternating phosphorus-potassium fertilizers with organic nitrogen-containing ones.
- Loosening, weeding and mulching. It is systematically required to loosen the near-trunk circle under the wisteria, as well as to remove the weed vegetation, which especially inhibits the culture at a young age. To slow down the rate of evaporation of moisture from the soil in the trunk circle, you can use mulch.
- Pruning and shaping vines. After flowering, dried inflorescences are removed. As necessary, young shoots are sent and tied up and dry branches are removed. Formative pruning, in which young shoots are shortened by 40 cm, is carried out in the summer season. If the gardener wants to admire the standard tree, then when the liana reaches three years of age, in the spring, it is necessary to remove all side shoots.
Reproduction of Chinese Wisteria
At home, wisteria is propagated by seed and vegetative methods.
In the process of execution of the seed method, the following actions are performed:
- At the beginning of winter, a nutritious soil mixture is created to fill the seedling container from sheet, turf soil and sand in a ratio of 4: 1: 1.
- Seed is distributed over the surface of the prepared substrate and lightly sprinkled with sand.
- The container is covered with glass and installed in a dark room with a temperature regime in the range of 22 - 25 ° C.
- After the emergence of seedlings, the container moves to the light with previously removed protection.
- When forming 1 pair of real leaves, seedlings dive into separate pots, where they are watered with a weak solution of manganese.
Advice! Before planting wisteria in open ground, seedlings should be hardened, accustomed to future growing conditions.
The second productive and fairly simple way is reproduction by layering.
- For this purpose, a low-lying annual shoot is selected.
- A shallow groove is made next to which a previously cut along the oblique layers is laid.
- A laid shoot is fixed with metal staples and dug in such a way that only the top remains above the ground.
- During the season, layering is treated like an adult plant.
- The rooted shoot is separated next spring.
Propagation by cuttings is not considered highly productive, but it is sometimes used because of the ease of obtaining cuttings of the desired variety of Chinese wisteria. The grafting procedure, in which parts of shoots 25 cm long are harvested, is carried out in the second half of April.
- When preparing cuttings from the bottom, oblique sections are made.
- Sprigs are matured in a growth promoter.
- Then, the processed planting material is buried in open ground by 2 cm.
- Caps are installed on top to create greenhouse conditions. In the process of rooting, plantings are systematically ventilated and moistened.
Pests and diseases - how to treat
The list of pests and diseases that affect and attack Chinese Wisteria is small.
Among the diseases, chlorosis is distinguished, which often develops in plants growing on alkaline soils. To stop the development of the disease, it is recommended to start feeding the vine with iron salts.
Of the pests on the shoots of the culture, you can see sucking pests such as aphids and clover mites. As protective measures, insecticide treatments are applied according to the manufacturer's instructions indicated on the package.
Chinese wisteria in landscape design
