Guelder-rose buldenezh is an abundantly flowering shrub plant from the family Honeysuckle. Large spherical inflorescences give the culture a special decorative effect, which served as the name for the Buldenezh variety, which in French means “snowball”. Planting viburnum buldenezh and caring for it require compliance with certain rules that will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the bush for a long period of time.

Types and varieties of shrubs
Viburnum buldenezh is represented in gardens by such a spectacular variety as Viburnum Roseum - a terry variety of shrubs. The plant is distinguished by the color of inflorescences, the white color of which, characteristic of the beginning of flowering, becomes pale pink by the end of the phase.
Features of growing Kalina buldenezh
Decorative viburnum, like other plants, has its own characteristics that must be considered when cultivating a culture:
- the ability to give the shrub a standard shape;
- life cycle of about 50 years;
- sterility of flowers forming inflorescences with a diameter of up to 15 cm;
- the duration of the flowering phase from a crescent to a month;
- reaching a height of 3 m and a diameter of 1.5 m.
Planting ornamental shrubs
In order for the rooting of the young plant to be successful, and further growth accompanied by regular lush flowering, it is necessary with all responsibility to approach the choice of location and optimal time for planting.
How and when to plant?
The planting time will depend on the method of propagation of the bush chosen by the gardener.
- If layering or purchased seedlings are used, the procedure is carried out in early spring, which allows the young specimen to take root well and have time to adapt to new growing conditions.
- In the case when the division of the bush is carried out, the resulting plants are planted in the autumn. However, there is a risk that frosty weather will occur earlier than the planting material fully survives.
Site and soil preparation
To grow a decorative plant, a site is selected with a slight shade from direct sunlight, which can cause burns. In the absence of such territories, preference is given to shadow zones with a large amount of free space, which allows viburnum to develop freely. Soil to ensure a culture of full development should have a loose structure, a good fertile layer and a slightly acid reaction.
Landing rules
For the landing process to be successful, you should be guided by a number of rules:
- At a selected site, a landing pit is excavated measuring 60x60x80 cm, where 80 cm is the depth that allows you to not cause discomfort to the powerful root system of viburnum buldenezh.
- A drainage layer of crushed stone and expanded clay or broken building material is placed at the bottom of the pit.
- The drainage layer is covered with sand 15 cm thick.
- A nutrient substrate prepared from 35 kg of compost, 500 g of wood ash and 200 g of azofoska is poured on top.
- Planting material is lowered into the recess and filled with soil so that the root neck is deepened by 3 cm.
- The near-stem circle is abundantly irrigated and mulched with sawdust or peat.
Kalina buldenezh: care
For viburnum, which is characterized by excellent decorative qualities, appropriate comprehensive care is required.
It includes irrigation, enrichment of the soil with nutrients, systematic pruning, and timely protection of buldenezh from harmful organisms.
Watering
The culture, blooming in large balls of snow-white color, needs a systematic and plentiful watering, which provides such splendor of inflorescences. Do not allow prolonged drying of the soil in the near-stem circle. Even in autumn, before the onset of cold weather, the plant needs a large amount of water, which will make it possible to protect the shrub from winter dehydration.
Top dressing
The implementation of systematic dressing begins with the second year of life of a seedling after planting.
Fertilizer is applied twice a season:
- At the beginning of the growing season, the bush is fed with nitrogen-containing mineral or organic fertilizers, which makes it possible for the plant to grow a dense green mass.
- In autumn, the soil under buldenezh is enriched with phosphorus-potash fertilizers, which help the plant prepare for winter and survive it successfully.
Important! After top dressing, the soil in the near-stem circle is necessarily moistened.
Pruning
To form a spectacular, magnificent crown, buldenezh is subjected to systematic pruning, which is carried out after flowering by shortening the shoots, removing dry and growing inward branches.
From viburnum buldenezh, you can form a standard or bush form, at the request of gardeners:
- To form a standard tree, all lateral shoots are removed in a timely manner, and the crown begins to form after the plant reaches a height of 1.5 m.
- To create a bush form, the young specimen is cut to 20 cm, which stimulates the growth of side branches.
Attention! Pruning viburnum buldenege in the fall is not carried out to enable the plant to properly prepare for the winter season.
Support and pinching
Another measure to achieve abundant flowering is pinching young shoots in mid-summer. Thin shoots of viburnum under the weight of large inflorescences can break, so the culture needs support and garter.
Preparation for winter
Guelder-rose is a frost-resistant crop, therefore, does not need additional shelter. However, in severe winters, the soil in the near-stem zone is better to mulch with a thick layer of peat or compost.
Protection against diseases and pests
Decorative pests often harm pests such as aphids, scabies and viburnum leaf beetle. It is necessary to fight them with the help of insecticidal drugs, which are distinguished by good performance.
Among the diseases, the most common is powdery mildew, from which the plant can be protected by spraying the crown with a fungicide. With a strong development of fungal disease, treatment is carried out in several stages with an interval of 10-12 days.
Kalina buldenezh: reproduction
Due to the sterility of the flowers, which do not produce fruit, and, accordingly, seed material, reproduction is carried out only by vegetative methods.
Layering
This method of cultivation is carried out in the spring, when:
- 10 cm deep grooves are prepared.
- Annual shoots bend to the ground level, being fixed with metal hooks, and sprinkle with soil.
- After the emergence of shoots, hilling is carried out.
- Layers after rooting are separated from the maternal specimen and are planted in individual containers.
- Planting seedlings in open ground is carried out after 2 years.
Dividing the bush
The easiest way to do it in the fall:
- A sharp tool is being prepared.
- A daughter shoot with a part of a developed root system is carefully separated from the parent instance.
- A new plant is planted at a permanent place of growth.
Cuttings
Cutting is a rather time-consuming and lengthy process in which:
- In the summer, during pruning, cuttings are prepared from young shoots with 3 buds.
- Slicing sites are treated with an antiseptic agent in the form of crushed activated carbon and are kept in a solution of a growth stimulator, accelerating the process of root formation.
- With the help of turf land, humus and sand, beds are prepared in equal shares for planting.
- Prepared cuttings are buried in a substrate of 2.5 cm.
- Plantings are well moistened and covered with a film to create greenhouse conditions.
With constant ventilation and irrigation, planting material will take root already at the end of August.
Landscape design
Due to the beauty and grace of viburnum, buldenege landscape designers often use it for landscaping a variety of areas:
- as a single landing against a mowed lawn;
- as a border plant near conifers;
- near benches and arbors;
- for the formation of hedges or shady alleys;
- when decorating an artificial pond in a country house or in a park area.
Thus, the decorative culture, distinguished by its special tenderness and grace, when fulfilling the basic requirements for planting and care, will not only decorate the site, but will bring the owners a bit of harmony and unique coziness.
