A rose with long shoots encircling vertical supports, one of the most beautiful curly perennials, unfortunately, is not very winter-hardy. How to cover a climbing rose for the winter in central Russia, in Siberia and the Urals is an important issue for beginner gardeners.

Preparing a climbing rose for wintering
Preparation for wintering begins with pruning the bush in September.
Long shoots are removed from the support, if the winter is harsh, they are annually shortened to a height convenient for the construction of an air-dry shelter.
Lignified thick stems that do not bend are cut off by secateurs at a height of about 1.2 above the ground.
Then they dig up the earth around the bush to a depth of about 20 cm, trying not to touch the roots. Leaves from shoots are removed with secateurs, especially those that are damaged by pests or diseases. And also cut off all diseased shoots and too old, lignified. This will facilitate shelter, there will be more light and air in the bush, next year the plant will bloom better.
Before sheltering a rose, with which it is difficult to prune leaves due to the length of the stem, they are sprayed with iron sulfate (300 g of the preparation per 10 liters of water). Copper-containing preparations are undesirable, since copper accumulates in the soil, poisoning it. This further restrains the development of roses, prevents them from absorbing nutrients during feeding.
In addition to pruning, during the preparation of roses for the winter, you need to pay attention to dressing and watering.
In August, nitrogenous fertilizers are stopped under plants, replacing them with potash and phosphorus. Since early September, watering has been gradually reduced, stopping it completely when the ground freezes.
Do I need to cover climbing roses for the winter
The need for shelter of a climbing rose depends on the region of cultivation. In central Russia, all varieties of this plant need protection from winter frosts. They are removed from the supports, trimmed, and covered with spruce branches and non-woven covering material.
On the southern coast of Crimea, where all tropical plants feel great, roses do not need shelter.
Time frame for the procedure
In the fall there are long thaws, the extra time that roses stay under cover, without light, worsens their condition. Therefore, there is no need to rush to shelter. This is best done on a dry autumn day.
They begin to remove the lashes from the support one and a half months before the onset of steady frost.
The rules of shelter in the suburbs
The order of sheltering roses in different regions is similar. Only the thickness of the shelter is different, and the time to start work. In the suburbs, roses begin to shelter in October.
Process description:
- Before laying roses, wear rubberized gloves so as not to prick.
- All branches removed from the support are collected in a bundle and bent, putting a light weight on top for the duration of the shelter, which keeps the plant in a bent state.
- Planks, spruce branches or polystyrene are placed under the branches so that they do not lie on the ground in winter.
- If the rose is too big and it is impossible to cut off all the leaves, it is treated with fungicides before shelter. The most important thing is to remove the established fertility, because in the winter they will surely decay.
- Install the frame. To create it, use polypropylene pipes or iron reinforcement (mesh) for concrete work. It is bent in an arc, and placed over the bushes.
- Spunbond (40th or 60th) is pulled on top of the arcs, bricks are pressed on the bottom. Do not cover the film over the spunbond, because condensation will accumulate under it.
If warm days come, lift the ends of the spunbond up to provide air ventilation to the plants.
In the Urals
To properly cover the climbing rose in the Urals, you can build different air-dry shelters that will protect delicate flowers from severe frosts. The more air under such shelters, the better. In order not to accumulate condensation and moisture, evaporation from the earth, it is advisable not to use a film.
Non-woven covering materials are better suited for this:
- lutrasil;
- spanbond;
- agrotex;
- agrospan.
Shelter is convenient to do if the roses are planted compactly in one rose garden. For the construction of the frame, several pipes bent by arcs are installed one after another at a distance of about 80 cm.
For the installation of arcs, polypropylene thin pipes can be used from which the water supply is mounted. They bend easily, and do not deteriorate from frost.
Arcs are needed so that the shelter does not press snow to the ground, and the branches do not break.
From above, two thin crossbars (from iron reinforcement) are fastened with adhesive tape or fastening clamps.
If the earth is tightly packed, it is better to stick pipes with iron pegs. It is enough to install two arcs on one plant. Above the frame stretch the covering material, folded in two layers. Before the snow falls, spruce branches are additionally placed on the spanbond.
In Siberia
In order not to freeze the roots of roses that are grown in Siberia, you need to sprinkle them with dry soil taken from the other end of the garden. This can be done in stages. In September, when it gets colder, sprinkle the base of the shoots, and in October, sprinkle branches.
An earthen shelter will protect the rose even during severe frosts, but only until a certain time. Therefore, an air shelter is also placed on top. Small bushes can be covered with branches, building a hut on top, and pulling non-woven material folded in two layers on top.
To prevent moisture from seeping in, the spanbond is placed on the shelter with the rough side down and the shiny side up, then the plants will not get wet from the rain.
You can not cover the roses with green plant debris, in the winter they will begin to rot.In addition to dry branches and spruce branches, for shelter you can use dry fallen leaves from oak, fern and reed. Mice like to hibernate under shelters for roses. Therefore, you can put poisoned bait inside.
Preserving beautiful heat-loving roses in winter in harsh conditions is not so difficult, having built an air-dry shelter for them. With proper care, rose bushes live more than 30 years, delighting the owners with annual abundant flowering.
