English roses are a large group of varieties created by the Englishman D. Austin in the 80s of the last century. Experts call the selection of D. Austin a breakthrough in world gardening. As a result of the crossing of Damask and Bourbon varieties with hybrid tea and floribunda roses, new plants with unique characteristics appeared.

English rose: breeding

The easiest way to propagate roses is cuttings. To do this, you need to choose a developed and healthy shoot of the first flowering wave and cut it into cuttings 10 cm long. Then, the workpieces need to be dug in a shady place and covered with transparent caps. You can use the top of the plastic bottle with a cap. Unscrewing the lid, it is convenient to water and ventilate the cuttings.

Climbing roses are easier to propagate by layering. One of the faded extreme lashes needs to be bent to the ground, dug and fixed with wire. In spring, such a seedling can be transplanted to a permanent place.

Preparing and planting flowers

Consider the process of preparing and planting a seedling on the example of the English rose Falstaff. The purchased seedling should be strong, healthy, with flexible roots and green shoots (at least 3 pieces).

The best place to land is a sunny area, where there are no sudden gusts of wind. Do not plant roses in areas with a high level of groundwater.

The dimensions of the pit are standard: width - 70 cm, depth - 60 cm. For planting, prepare a substrate of sand, rotted manure, peat and fertile soil. It is advisable to add special fertilizers for roses and a glass of wood ash.

Rose Falstaff is best planted in the spring. The soil should be heated to a minimum of 14-15 degrees.

Before planting, soak the seedling in water with root. The procedure for landing:

  1. Pour a mound of land to the bottom of the pit.
  2. Carefully spread the roots.
  3. Cover the roots with soil so that the root neck is 3-4 cm below the surface.
  4. Tamp the ground and water well.
  5. Mulch the earth with leaves, straw, bark, mowed grass.

After this, constant care of the seedling should include regular watering, fertilizing and loosening the soil. Irrigation rate - 10 liters of warm water for each bush weekly. In the first year after planting, fertilizing is not needed.

The nuances of growing and caring for English roses

Caring for roses and growing them is a feasible task even for beginners. However, you should know some nuances.

It must be borne in mind that in regions where rainy weather often occurs, terry cup-shaped and spherical flowers may simply not open. Sometimes gardeners have to do this manually, carefully opening the rows of outer petals.

Young plants need support, as their thin branches bend strongly under the weight of lush flowers. But over the years, this problem disappears, as the shoots become strong and strong.

From the second year of planting, you should take care of timely top dressing:

  • in spring - rotted manure;
  • after 2-3 weeks with ammonium nitrate;
  • during the appearance of buds and flowering - phosphorus-calcium fertilizers.

Overfeeding roses is also not worth it, as they can turn yellow and drop leaves.In autumn, there is no need to carry out feeding, so as not to provoke the appearance of new shoots.

In order for roses to have a beautiful shape, they need to be trimmed correctly.

Advice:

  1. In early spring, cut the shoots in half before the buds swell.
  2. After flowering, shorten the shoots by a third.
  3. Pinch young stems by 5 cm during the summer.
  4. Overgrown branches to delete completely.
  5. Cut off faded buds.

The most winning form for English roses is the hemisphere.

Plant diseases and pests

English roses are considered quite resistant to most diseases, but sometimes they can hurt.

The most common diseases:

  • powdery mildew;
  • rust;
  • black spotting;
  • peronosporosis.

To prevent this, it is advisable to carry out periodic sprayings.

Sometimes roses are invaded by pests - green aphids, spider mites, leaf moths, sawflies, thrips. They not only damage the plant, but can also carry various diseases. In this case, urgently need to spray the bushes with special solutions.

Technology of sheltering roses for the winter

Most English roses tolerate frosts of -16-20 degrees, but in our area winters are very severe. Therefore, for the winter they must be spud and lapnik. As soon as frosts come, make a frame and cover it with a spanbond. Carefully remove the shoots of climbing roses, put them on a pillow of spruce branches, cover with foliage and special material.

In spring, make sure that the rose does not cross. It is advisable to remove part of the shelter, but cover the plants with material before the onset of relative heat.

Use in landscape design

In landscape design, English roses are used everywhere. They can become the main object of the garden or play a secondary role. Proper pruning allows you to create a flowering hedge out of them that looks very impressive.

They perfectly coexist with coniferous or evergreen shrubs. Low-growing varieties are used for container gardening, as a border, or for group plantings.

The best neighbors in flower beds are delphinium, digitalis, veronica, sage, catnip, geranium. In spring, flower beds with roses complement tulips, peonies, hyacinths.

The variety of shades of roses is very large, in addition, many varieties bloom repeatedly or almost continuously. Unpretentious care and good external characteristics have led to the fact that English roses have become the favorites of many gardeners.
