Release forms, antibiotic composition
This antibiotic is very popular among therapists and pediatricians, as it has high quality, an acceptable price tag and a convenient form for use (there is a choice).
The drug can be purchased in several types of forms:
- tablets (ordinary, coated with an intestinal soluble film, instant in the mouth);
- powder for injection;
- composition for preparing a suspension.
Injections are prescribed extremely rarely, it is the suspension that is most popular.
Amoxiclav 1000 mg consists of two main components:
- amoxicillin;
- clavulanic acid.
Excipients depend on the type of medication.
Pharmacological properties and indications for use
The antibiotic Amoxiclav is endowed with a fairly wide spectrum of action, as it relates to penicillin group preparations.
Amoxicillin, which is part of the drug, is endowed with the ability to quickly destroy the walls of harmful microbes, which leads to the death of the microorganism.Clavulanic acid does not have a pronounced antibacterial effect, but is one of the main components. What is the role of this substance?
Penicillin was discovered several decades ago and helped fight many types of bacteria. It destroys harmful microorganisms, prevents them from multiplying. But over time, many types of microbes have learned to withstand the action of the antibiotic, and it has become not so effective, useless in the fight against many diseases. Amoxicillin alone cannot withstand beta-lactamases, which many bacteria produce to protect themselves. This is where clavulanic acid comes to the rescue: it quickly and effectively eliminates beta-lactamases, opening the way for amoxicillin.
Thus, it turns out that the joint work of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is more effective than that carried out by pure amoxicillin.
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of many types of diseases caused by bacterial infections that occur with inflammation.
This antibiotic is used to relieve symptoms and reduce the duration of the following ailments:
- diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract, ENT diseases (pharyngitis, tracheitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, rhinitis, tonsillitis and so on);
- gynecological, urological and andrological diseases;
- skin diseases caused by microbial infections;
- infectious diseases of the bone tissue.
Amoxiclav is prescribed for tonsillitis, infections of the oral cavity, suppuration of wounds (including bites).
The components of the drug quickly spread through the tissues of the body, thus providing universal therapy. Amoxicillin is metabolized rather weakly and leaves the body through the kidneys, remaining almost unchanged. Clavulanic acid is converted into metabolites, excreted from tissues with urine.
Age restrictions on admission
There are no restrictions on the appointment depending on age.
The only thing is that a form of antibiotic is chosen in which the patient will probably be able to take it.
For babies up to three months of age, for the most part, it is injections that are administered intravenously. You can then give the child a suspension, and usually after 12 years it is recommended to switch to pills.
Both adults and children can take at least tablets, at least a suspension, you just need to correctly calculate the dosage.
Instructions for use Amoxiclav 1000mg + 200mg
To begin with, we offer to decrypt 1000 + 200. This is the composition of the drug. Here, 1000 mg is amoxicillin, and 200 mg is clavulanic acid.
Dosage depends on many factors:
- type of ailment, its course;
- age and weight of the patient;
- kidney function and so on.
An insufficient amount of medication consumed affects the effectiveness of treatment. Low consistency of substances leads to the fact that bacteria simply develop resistance, reducing the effect of the antibiotic to zero. A high dosage can lead to side effects.
Therefore, it is important that the drug is prescribed only by a qualified doctor, it can be both a therapist and an infectious disease specialist.
A course antibiotic treatment may have a period of 5 days to two weeks. If when taking the medicine after 14 days there were no noticeable improvements, it is possible to extend the course (only after consulting a doctor), but it is better to replace the drug. In the case when the patient before the completion of the course felt that he has recovered, treatment should not be interrupted, he is brought to the end, as there is a risk of relapse!
Amoxiclav in any form must be taken by the hour.
The strict schedule of admission allows you to achieve a stable uniform concentration of the antibiotic in the body, and this gives greater treatment effectiveness. For example, the drug is prescribed three times a day, you need to take it after 8 hours, twice after 12.
Taking the medicine does not depend on food intake, and you can drink an antibiotic both with food, before or after it.But doctors strongly do not recommend taking the drug on an empty stomach, in order to reduce the risk of side effects associated with the gastrointestinal tract.
Next, consider the instructions for using the antibiotic in the form of a suspension and tablets.
Suspension Amoxiclav
In the box with the drug is an annotation. It is necessary to dilute the powder, as prescribed in it. The amount of water used depends on the volume of the bottle in which the powder is contained.
Pour only chilled boiled water up to the measuring line on the bottle.
Shake the medicine container with a few sharp movements. Before each use, shake the bottle. Store in the refrigerator during the course, do not save leftovers!
For children, the dosage is calculated based on the weight and form of the disease:
- mild course - for each kg 20 mg of the finished drug will be required (up to three times a day);
- severe course or acute form - 30-40 mg per kg (twice a day).
For the convenience of measuring the medicine, use the attached measuring spoon.
For adults, an antibiotic in this form is not prescribed, since it has a high consumption.
It’s easier to use pills.
Amoxiclav tablets
At this dosage, an antibiotic can be taken for children from 12 years old and adults with a weight of at least 40 kilograms.
There are two ways to use it:
- with a mild course of the disease, take half a tablet three times a day;
- severe course - one pill twice a day.
Be sure to drink a tablet with a large volume of liquid.
The dosage prescribed in this section and in the section above should be adjusted by a specialist, depending on the work of the kidneys.
Patients with insufficiency of this organ require a smaller amount of the drug.
Amoxiclav during pregnancy and lactation
It is very difficult for expectant mothers and women breastfeeding babies to find a medicine that would not harm, especially an antibiotic. But "Amoxiclav" refers specifically to those drugs that can be used to treat pregnant and lactating women, but only as prescribed by the doctor!
The components of the drug penetrate both the placenta and breast milk, but in small quantities.
To date, there is no data on the negative effects of the components on the health of the baby and on fetal development.
But there is evidence that the risk of necrosis of the colon in infants at birth is higher if the mother took the antibiotic described during pregnancy. It is worth remembering that untreated bacterial infections can cause a child much more problems, therefore, Amoxiclav during pregnancy is much safer.
The drug is prescribed only when there is a special need, when treatment is impossible without an antibiotic.
When treating a woman during lactation, there are no contraindications to breastfeeding. A small amount of the drug that enters the body of the baby will protect it from possible infection from the mother.
Can I drink alcohol while taking the drug
The attached annotation does not say a word about the possibility of alcohol consumption during treatment with Amoxiclav.
Alcohol and the active substances of the antibiotic do not react, therefore, the effectiveness of treatment does not decrease.
But the simultaneous intake of alcohol during the course of Amoxiclav is unacceptable, since there is a high probability of getting a toxic effect on the body. The fact is that both antibiotics and alcohol-containing drinks heavily load the liver. The body will not fully cope with the work, and not removed toxins will begin to accumulate in the blood and tissues of the patient.
Drug interaction
You can take the drug at the same time with other bactericidal drugs, but only with the appointment of a doctor. The therapeutic effect will be stronger in this case, therefore, dosage adjustment may be required.
You can not combine the drug with the following types of drugs:
- With bacteriostatic antibiotics, Amoxiclav is not applicable, since therapeutic effectiveness will be reduced.
- Methotrexate is prohibited if Amoxiclav is being treated. The fact is that an antibiotic greatly increases the toxicity of methotrexate.
- Disulfiram is not recommended for use in conjunction with Amoxiclav, as this can lead to severe allergic reactions.
It is worth noting that women who take contraceptives of a hormonal origin will need to take care of additional protection during treatment with Amoxiclav.
Contraindications, side effects and overdose
As for contraindications, the antibiotic has few of them. This medicine is even applicable for children, including infants. Under the supervision of a doctor, pregnant women are treated.
The main contraindication is intolerance to the components of the drug.
In what other cases, the antibiotic is not applicable, can be seen in the list:
- during treatment with similar drugs jaundice arose;
- impaired renal function or their chronic diseases.
Until the age of 12, taking pills is not recommended.
The antibiotic described in the article is very well tolerated by patients of all ages, therefore side effects are extremely rare. Most often, people complain of problems with the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea, nausea may appear. The fact is that Amoxiclav, like any other antibiotic, eliminates not only pathogenic bacteria, but also useful ones needed by the body. Dysbacteriosis comes.
If, after a course of antibiotic, consume drugs that replenish the number of beneficial bacteria (probiotics), then the risk of a problem will decrease significantly.
Other but rarer side effects:
- Candidiasis may appear on the mucous membranes and skin (women develop thrush more often).
- In some cases, taking Amoxiclav leads to an allergy, which is more often manifested by a rash and rhinitis, less commonly, edema or anaphylactic shock. If signs of an allergic reaction appear, the drug should be immediately withdrawn.
- With prolonged treatment, a number of elderly patients and people who abuse alcohol experienced malfunctioning of the liver. Most of them were manifested by cholestatic jaundice, less often - hepatitis.
- Also, some patients noted headaches, dizziness, and there were problems with sleep.
An overdose of the drug is possible if not used according to the instructions (overestimate the dose or shorten the interval). But no fatalities were noted. If you suspect an overdose (nausea, fever, dizziness, vomiting may occur), call a doctor immediately!
All side effects caused by the antibiotic are reversible. But in some cases, the medicine is canceled, and the doctor prescribes analogues of Amoxiclav. We will consider them further.
Analogues of the antibiotic Amoxiclav
If it comes to replacing Amoxiclav with a similar medicine, then you need to carefully consider the composition. Those drugs that consist only of amoxicillin are not analogues, since they affect a smaller number of harmful microorganisms. The antibiotic must necessarily contain clavulanic acid.
Both main components are part of the following drugs:
- “Augmentin”;
- "Solutab";
- "Ecoclave";
- "Panklav";
- "Arlet."
It is difficult to find analogues cheaper. All prescribed drugs belong to the same price category. And the cost varies between 200-300 rubles.
It makes no sense to buy an antibiotic more expensive, since the action will still be similar.
The use of any drug should always be agreed with the doctor. Do not self-medicate, this can lead to serious complications. Good health!
