On the eve of the new year, National Geographic television channel decided to hold an interesting contest among photographers. The theme of the competition is the most beautiful and unexpected pictures of 2018.
The purpose of the competition is to show the power of photography and how a regular shot helps you to feel the atmosphere of places and people. Each of the images captures.

1 unexpected storm
Photographer Randy Olson took this picture during a storm. A 30-second exposure allowed him to capture the moment of lightning strike and the ghostly image of birds in flight. There are many pelican habitats on the Pacific Ocean, but today global warming and water pollution are the main problem that reduces their population.
2 On the edge of the world
Photographer Alessandra Menikontsi photographed a girl from Siberia who was collecting firewood. Although Russia is one of the most powerful countries in the world, many residents of distant regions still live without central heating.

4 Eyes of the protester
In July 2016, Jonathan Bachmann photographed this unexpected image of a detained man protesting as a result of the killing of Alton Sterling. Sterling was killed by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana that month. He was just one of many black men who unjustly died at the hands of law enforcement officials.
5 The terrifying beauty of nature
American territories are often exposed to climatic elements: hurricanes, storms, forest fires. Many of the photographs presented at the competition were devoted to the topic of ice and cold. Roy Galitz took a picture of a sleeping bear on Svalbard Island. Polar bears live literally several tens of square kilometers all their lives. Glaciers are melting due to rapid climate change, so the fate of many polar bears is at risk.

Olympic cyclists are fast, so only a professional photographer can take a shot of a race. Tim Clayton took this picture of the British team at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. By the way, the team won gold.
